How many other sound sources are you planning on mixing together? That will determine how many channels of mixer you will need. In general the Mackie mixers are great bang for the buck, and they make a small 12 channel mixer that works will if you don't have a lot of outboard synths or other gear to mix together with your mbox outputs.

As Slim said, the Mackies are nice and small. They make many models with different number of inputs.

Sometimes I use a Soundcraft Spirit Folio with my MBox. It's very small, four mic inputs with phantom power, two stereo inputs that can even be switched for turntables.

Hi,

Which way do you rout a mixer to your MBox and how can I use outboard gear, ie. compressor, vocoder, etc. Should I go into the Mixer aux or into the Mbox insert?

The M-box insert is for inserting dynamics or ouboard eq for tracking only. You cannot insert hardware dynamics using the M-box, it only has 2 i/o, except if you bounce a mono file out one, through the hardware unit and back in 2. Plugins are your only option.

Why not route your signal to a mixer and effect it with your outboard gear and route it back to your MBox.

Only thing is you will have to set the track being recorded to an output other than Audio 1 and 2 otherwise you'll experience feedback.

It's a wee bit tricky but it can be done, and you can monitor the track on the mixer.

I've used this method before using an AMIII card and a Mackie 1202 mixer.

You could either use the inserts or the Aux Send and Return. If you use the inserts you will need Y cables also known as "Insert Cables" one TRS to 2 mono 1/4" The 2 mono ends act as a send and return to the insert per channel of your effects device. If you are unsure about this method consult your local music store and ask about insert cables and what they are commonly used for.
