Default Splitting Audio Clip Into Equal Parts

I'm wondering if in PT 12- is there a way to split/divide a track into equal parts. And to perhaps indicate the length of the clip you'd like it to be divided into (ex. 1 second, or 1 measure).

Thanks

Set the grid to whatever size you want your clips to be and then use "separate clip at grid" from the edit menu.

Just for fun, here's another way to do it with keyboard shortcuts, if you don't have the tempo set to match the clip.

Select the clip
command+option+control+shift+L (Halve the length of the Selection)
repeat to make 1/4 or 1/8 or any subdivision of 2

Let's say you cut your selection to to 1/4, it will be a the first part of the clip

press B to split (assuming keyboard command focus is on otherwise command+E)

then
command+control+option+apostrophe(') (move selection forward by selection amount)
press B to split again

repeat two more times, and you will have four equal quarters.

command+option+control+shift+apostrophe-will double the selection
command+control+option+L- will move selection back by selection amount

These are really useful shortcuts, and I was unaware of them for years.

Obviously the key combinations are beastly!

That's why I have programmed them as part of the single key commands on my Pro Tools controller the Hotkey Matrix:)

That's cool, Brian. Thanks!

Another way I use sometimes is to utilize a dummy track that I group with the track I want to slice up, especially with awkward lengths. Say, 25 seconds.

- create dummy track
- place cursor at first clip start, and type in a length of 25 secs
- Shift+Option+3 to consolidate a silent clip on the dummy
- select clip and repeat it as necessary
- create an edit group with the dummy and the other track(s)
- select the first clip on the dummy, and hit B to separate
- Ctrl+Tab to select the next clip, and hit B
- repeat above step until finished

What do think the best is the best way to set "grid to clips/markers"? Beat detective tempo event? If the tempo is not an even bpm (like 90.234 bpm) I sometimes just drag the tempo slider around, and fine tune until the clips towards the end line up.

One thing I tend to do when using something like Stig's dummy track method is to use the "group clip" command, instead of consolidating. It's functionally equivalent, but won't add extra audio clips to the session. Any selection on the edit window, whether it has clips, no clips, or is intersecting clips will create a new group clip, which is handy for a lot of operations like this.

I meant :
"To define a Grid based on the session’s Markers,
selections, and clip boundaries, select
Clips/Markers from the Grid value pop-up menu."

I've never used that setting before, what does it actually do?

I can see that it will show little blue lines at the top of the edit window where the clip boundaries are. Is it just a visual aid?

edit: it looks like it is just a visual aid, but it would be very helpful for certain types of tempo matching tasks, as we are discussing.

Thanks!

I have no clue about the use of grid-set-to-clips/markers concerning tempo operations, but it is not just a visual aid, as the menu Edit -> Separate Clip -> On Grid will cut the clip on the grouped audio track to the same length as the clips on the dummy track.
Snapping a clip on another track to the boundaries of the clips on the dummy track works, too.
My post was just an alternative to Stig's method for cutting the long clip, a kind of "batch-cutting".
It is important, that all tracks except the audio track with the long clip and the dummy track are hidden, so the grid will be defined solely by the clips on the dummy track. (And no markers set, as they would define the grid, too.)

For cutting a long clip according the grid defined by markers, you could see my comment on an idea here : http://protools.ideascale.com/a/dtd/...a-tab-comments
