I find this kind of post worrying. Does anyone here think this is a good time to get into HD? For someone who has spent time away from PT.
The prices have been jacked up and there are all these complaints about updates etc.
Is this a bad time to start to build an HD rig. I just wprry about the future.
A company that puts prices up that much and doesn't deliver sounds like a company in trouble no? Hope i am wrong.
The most appealing thing about pro tools to me is that you can make a session in pro tools....then in 20 years, you can re open that session in pro tools. That is a huge part of the appeal

If you need HDX systems, beyond the software, yes. Dedicated controllers, HDX, the entire Avid ecosystem is difficult to replace. But if not, the Steinberg or Presonus alternative (I'm not able to work with the Studio One GUI for me), as many studios do, is valid. I work with a Prismsound interface (atlas) and Cubase, often, and I can go up to 192 khz, 64 bit floats (I'm talking about files, because the processing is always at 64 bit). Plus, when I mix with a good buffer (2048), I can do what I want without DSP, especially with my two UAD cards. There are a hundred ways to work well without the super Avid contract. Depends on what you need. If you identify them here, you'll have some advice. There are a lot of very good connoisseurs.

If folks are really concerned and want to switch, you can download Logic X Pro for free for 90 days to use and see if it works for you. Didn't for me, but trying it for free is a nice price... same deal on Final Cut Pro X as well.

Beyond the software, yes, everything is much much easier. The PT mix window however is hard to replace.

Interesting replies. Yes the ecosystem is the attractive thing. I have a slate Raven (which works best with PT IMO) and would look to get an HDX system in the near future. Having the extra processing power is attractive to me.

One of the main things i like about pro tools is - automation features. this is really where it is at for me. That and audio editing, two things that pro tools does better than pretty much anything.
However, if i want those automation features, i absolutely have to get pro tools ultimate. So its quite a commitment straight away.
If i could use vanilla for a while, see if i can get into a flow with it and then upgrade i would feel a little easier about it.


One of my main concerns at the moment is latency and PDC. I have had so many issues with channels going out fo time when i change oversampling settings, bounces/commit printing out of time.
Running parallel comps that have oversampling/lookahead has been problematic. I feel if all of these things were non issues, i would just pull the plug regardless.


You know, i think this is probably what is taking all the time with folder tracks. They may have had difficulties with PDC. Pure speculation of course.


Really appreciate the advice anyway guys. I was a hardcore PT addict for 15 years, it still feels like home.

I agree with the comments that each DAW has strengths, you will never find one to do everything. Reaper comes close to that but the truth is, the pro tools workflow/organisation/efficiency of tools is hard to beat.

No, you're not wrong... They have a huge dept, they have financial decline some years in a row and lose market share rapidly. It is pretty obvious that the future is bleak...if they continue with the same attitude.

There are many better options out there though, but it really depends of your actual needs, budget etc. The times where ProTools was essential for the studio, have totally gone.
Most of our clients do not care what platform we use, they care for the best possible result, in time and at the best price. This is the new reality. It is something you have to consider...
