Default Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and 56 Linked - WOW

You're not supposed to be able to do this, but I linked a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and Liquid 56 via firewire and got this:

http://home.comcast.net/~cwsand/saffire.html

I haven't fully tested it or set it up yet but DANG!

Everything seems to be working fine so far - even though I know I can't use all the I/O simultaneously. Anyone else tried this?

Be sure to post what you find out by testing. There are many of us with the Liquid Saffire 56. If it works as it sounds, some of us may be looking to buy the Saffire 40 too.

Hi there,

Using any two Saffires together will aggregate them using dual unit mode. From our testing, we found that two Pro 40s worked well together on many systems but using a Liquid Saffire 56 and a Saffire Pro 40, or two Liquid Saffire 56s was too much for some systems due to the bandwidth involved. As such, this is why we recommend against it and do not officially support it.

However, in saying this, there is no reason why this shouldn't work and, if you can get it to work well on your system then by all means continue using your 48 in and 48 out system! The good thing about firewire is that the isochronous bandwidth is reserved when the device is on the bus so, if the system is reliable then it shouldn't change too much depending on whether you're passing 2 channels of audio or 96.

Best of luck with this system and we'd love to hear how you get on with it.

Joe

Thanks for the post;

I use my Saffire Pro 40 every day in the studio and am currently replacing all of my location racks with Focusrite.

I love the drivers, the user interface is the second best in the world, and the company has been fantastic to work with. Now that PT supports it, I have moved from Sonar/Samplitude to PT for 90% of my work.

Make music!

absolutely love my LS56...just not a big fan of the mix control,if i was going to use more complicated setups it woud be fine but for recording and mixing in pro tools its just another layer of hassle,pro tools mixer pretty much does all the routing I need sooooo can we mabey get rid of that somehow for pro tools????I have every channel going out to a mixer and my monitoring setup is routed through there sooooo yeah the mixcontrol is overkill.Freaking sounds awesome tho,and seems rock solid....love focusrite gear...pretty much if it says JBL (harmon),Focusrite,or SSL ....I gotta check it out...have loved very thing I have used from those brands.

If you look very hard at this photo posted by the OP, you will notice that it is the Pro Tools I/O window. I don't know about you, but I'm sure he mentions Focusrite in his post.

Hi there! I am about to do this Saffire 56 and 40 linkage with Pro Tools 11. Does it work OK with your system? Do you use the firewire from one Saffire to the next one? how does the software interface recognize the 2?
