Default Re: What's the most current and stable PT/OSX combo?

10.3.7 on 10.8.5

Super stable on two systems here.

Also have 11.2.1 on them. 11 doesn't crash, but inserting, opening, adjusting plugins constantly kills the audio engine and causes the garbled sound until you go to playback engine and adjust the buffer lower or higher. Doesn't matter which. 11 is never open when clients are present. Too embarrassing.

That's the combo I'm going to go with.

I'm still unsure about the uninstall and my plugins. I want to avoid this:http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=346397

I've also read there are 3 uninstall options, but I don't know which I should use. I've never uninstalled PT before.

You all know how bad the avid site is. This page is out of date and incomplete:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...kbase&filter=0
For example, there's no mention of 10.3.5 under the co-install heading. Even the compatibility info at the top does not match the 'compatibility chart'

Can someone please (pretty please) answer these:

1. Can I update OSX before I uninstall and re-install PT? Or should I uninstall first?
2. With the co-install, do I have to install them separately or is there a combo installer?
3. From where do I get the uninstaller? Is it part of the install package or something separate
4. Will I have to re-install all of my plugin or will the uninstall leave them alone?
5. Are there secondary installers I have to run, such as AI plugins, and VI stuff?
6. Will I have to re-do all my PT prefs and OSX optimizations? Can I just import PT prefs file?

Yes, you can.

Yes, you should.

Either way, make a bootable backup first.

v10 and v11 have separate installation processes. There is no single button or app that will install both versions in a single pass.

/Applications/Avid/Pro Tools/Pro Tools Utilities/. It's also part of the .dmg file for the v10 installer. Do yourself a favor and use the clean uninstall option.

That depends. If you have the Pro Tools Instrument Expansion Pack (PTIEP), you will have to reinstall those plug-ins. If you keep the associated samples on a separate drive, then you will not have to reinstall the content.

For free plug-ins distributed by Avid, no.

If you have been working with v10.3.x already, your prefs will be usable with whatever v10.3.x you install. If you are coming from a version earlier than v10.3.0, it might work. If you are using v9 or earlier, you will have to recreate your preferences.

OSX optimizations should remain if you are upgrading an existing OS.

Thank you Jonhathan. What about my third party plugins? Will they be deleted with the uninstall or will they be left alone?

I am searching. And I'm not the only one with these questions:
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=328408

I've had a very fun time with past updates trying to track down impulse, VI's, plugins, etc. that were deleted, or not included in the new install, or whatever else. Hence my extreme caution. I believe it was PT8.

But it seems like I'm either going to spend hours before hand at the avid site and DUC trying to piece together the proper work flow, or hours afterwards trying to piece together whats missing. Either ways its hours needlessly spent.

You are welcome! Third party plug-ins will be left alone.

Well, I updated to OS X 10.8.5 and PT 10.3.7. Most things seem okay.

But I am having a crash when I close a session that has an Extra Long Delay with the feedback set at 80%.

When you stop playback, the delay is still reverberating. If I close the session right then, PT sounds its own very annoying feedback loop and won't stop until I close PT. The plug in crashes. This didn't happen before the updates.

I have more testing to do.

Quick addendum to above post. I don't necessarily have to close pro tools for it to stop. If I open another session so that something else loads into the sound engine it goes away as well. But if I do nothing it continues.

This is the crash I'm getting with this update:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrVa...ature=youtu.be

Sorry but the lens on my iphone was dirty when I took the video. If it's not clear this is what I'm doing in the vid:

Start play to trigger delay
Stop play and let delay reverberate
Close session while delay is still reverberating
Pro Tools yells at me
Quit Pro Tools and it stops yelling.

Alternately, I can just open a different (or the same) session.

I've also heard other noises throughout the day when PT is open but always when there is no session open. Opening a session eliminates the noise as it resets the audio engine to the new session. But there is some kind of bug or compatibility issue that is causing PT to generate noise when there are no sessions opened.

Has anyone else experienced this?
