Default Dolby CAT 43/Cat430 replacement

I just checked out a new plug in from www.wavearts.com. They have an inexpensive multiband (6 bands!) compressor/expander that works great for those pesky Cat 43/430 chores. The price is great at $149. Currently it is only RTAS. I normally use the Waves C4 for this but with 6 bands I was able to get just a little bit better results with the Wave Arts MultiDynamics plugin.

Another rare but useful tip from Pirate Post.

Peter,

I am going to admit my ignorance in front of all here on the DUC.

I have seen the Dolby device of which you speak in magazines. I've seen the "larc" like interface sitting on a console. I have read that it's main use is dialog cleanup.

But I have never used one.

Could you, or one of the other seasoned pros give us a little background, as well as some examples of use?

Thanks,

Frank Salazar

Frank,
A Dolby CAT 43 is a card that is inserted into a 360/361 Dolby and then the Cat 22 Dolby A card is inserted in the back of the Orange 5 fader remote. 4 Faders control the 4 bands of Compression/ Expansion of a standard CAT 22 Dolby A card. By adjusting up/ Down in the 4 bands one can clean up a large amount of Production noise in dialog tracks. It used to be if one was to walk onto a "DUB STAGE" and not see a CAT 43 and a UREI 565 Notch Filter then you were in the wrong room to seriously mix Sound for Picture! Times have changed. I would seriously look into what the "Pirate" sugested since he truely knows his stuff!!

Can a 43 be upgraded to 430 by simply swapping the 22 in the back of the remote by a Cat 280, or are there other shenanigans involved?

Tiago,
No, a CAT 43 and a CAT 430 are 2 very different things. You cannot swap the cards out. They also process differently. The combination of a CAT 43 and a CAT 430 is very nice on dialog.
