Default Xserve Raid 2.18TB as Storage

Hi,

Anyone use Apple Xserve Raid as the main Storage? We are trying to install a Xserve Raid 2.18T to use with our current Pro Tools HD|3. But we keep get DAE Error -9131. We can not record any thing into the Raid.

Systems includes.
Apple G4/867 DP 1G RAM / Mac OSX 10.39
Pro Tools HD /w Pro Tools 6.4 / 6.7 / 6.9
Apple Xserve Raid 2.18T dirct connect to G4
192 I/O Audio Interface

Also, I would like to know is there any body using Apple Xsan solution with their Pro Tools Studio? Any sucessful story?:)

Thanks,

Allen

I'm not sure about this, but I think Pro Tools will not write to (or read from) a RAID. And I don't think it's possible, using Apple's software, to set the XRAID up as JBOD (just a bunch of disks) individually. I called Apple about JBOD and they said no, but I've read other places that it may be possible.

It is not just a simple as just plugging in the fibre and mounting a volume.
Do you have more than 1 cpu accessing a volume.
It needs to RAID5 not 1 or 0.
whats the file system format? ( should be HFS+ ) and not anything else
etc........... on and on
I have used fibre, RAID volumes for years and have nothing bad happen with
this all is good.

Officially ProTools WILL NOT WORK on a network system reading audio from server drives. It doesn't even work with the $60,000 Avid Lanshare we purchased for our Avid video editors. We can access the server drives for STORAGE, but realtime record/playback must be on a "local" drive. I know there are 3rd party companies that make this work, but they're not sanctioned by Digi.

It's really a shame, especially when Sonic Solutions was doing this 15 years ago with MediaNet! Our Sonic systems could access networked drives with two or more editors accessing the same file at the same time. Oddly enough, any of our two-track editors, i.e. Peak, Spark, DSP Quattro, can record/play from the server, so it's definately a Digi issue.

It should be noted that if you put a fibre channel card in your PT system, you can connect the XServe RAID directly. Whether or not you can format it as HFS+ is another matter.

A fibre RAID volume will not be seen as networked !
It is a local volume. Even in a fabric environment it will still work !
It will necessitate volume management software such as Fibrejet if you want to use volumes in a network. All the Fibre networked volumes will be seen by the CPU as local. After the RAID Controller chunks out the Volumes you can format the volume as if it was a unformatted disk ( HFS+ ) and IT WILL work
for PT I've been doing it for years..
If in LA area I will be happy to make a service call....

Yes. The Fibre channel Raid will be treat as a local disk. It works fine with my G5/1.8DP and Pro Tools HD. But it jsut won't woth with G4/867 DP?

Any idea?

Thanks,

Allen
