Is anyone getting away with a G 400 and PT 6? |

Re: PT 6 with G400
I have the same computer and from what I''ve read, it isn't supported for PT 6 and OSX.

Anyone try it yet? We would like to but until PostConform for OSX is ready, we are waiting.

Re: PT 6 with G400
I'm running on an AGP G4/400 with 512MB RAM. OS 10.2.4 in general is a bit sluggish compared to faster machines, but totally useable. Pro Tools 6.0.1 and Xpress DV 3.5 are rock solid.

Re: PT 6 with G400
We're also interested in testing PT6/OSX on our G4/400/AGP machine which is still running an HD3 system just fine. We realize that certain new PT6 features such as dual processor-related functions would obviously not be supported. But if there are no other gotchas, we'd like to get our feet wet with OSX and take a good look at PT6. We're anxious to look at the new Digibase capabilities. Has anybody tested this on a G4/400?

Re: PT 6 with G400
I installed Protools 6 on my old G4/400/AGP. It worked. Then I got a Powerlogix 1 Ghz card from OWC the old 400 smokes now. You can get a Gigadesigns 1.2 Ghz card now from OWC for under $600. If you have an old 400 or 500 AGP G4 I would recommend this upgrade highly.

Re: PT 6 with G400
roberts, Thanks for raising that option. That might be a good way to extend the life of our 400. We'll have to compare that option with investing the same money towards a new Mac and all the new features and future capabilities it provides (dual processor, FW800, Superdrive, faster graphics, improved cache, etc). Did you already do that comparison?

Re: PT 6 with G400
The Way I see it Apple has always been slow at releasing faster Macs (Remember Power Computing always kicked Apple's butt). So If I can Get another 2 years out of my Mac an even faster Mac will be out then. I have tested a lot of upgrades in other machines and I think that that the upgrades for the older AGP G4 macs are excellent value for the money. I would get the Gigadesigns 1.2 Ghz upgrade. You will not be dissappointed..

Re: PT 6 with G400
I was running PT 6.0/HD3 on a G4/400/AGP for a while when I first switched to 6.0 and OSX. It seemed to run OK. My biggest issue was that when recording any kind of MIDI, the counters would get very jerky (more like a native system under stress). The MIDI seemed to record OK, though I didn't do a lot of testing. At that time my MIDI interface was a MOTU MTP AV but I also tried a small MIDIMan USB MIDI device and got similar results.
I have since moved to a dual 800 and the Digidesign MIDI I/O which works extremely well. Busch. |
