Howdy

The RAM of choice is one of the following:

Corsair TwinX 6400
Corsair TwinX 6400C4
Corsair TwinX 6400C4PRO

As far as I can tell they are all capable of 800mhz - the more expernsive stuff has lower latencies for more aggressive timings/overclocking etc. Middle of the range will probably be good enough. I might be getting corrupted by the dark side but another possibilty I'm considering for a second machine is an ASUS P5N32SLI SE - with a Nvidia NForce 4 chipset. Keen to hear of anyone's experience with Nvidia chipsets ...

I should have the first machine with the P5B Deluxe up and running within a week so I keep you all up to date.

Cheers

A word of caution...

I've spoken to DigiDesign and they said we're on our own for the core 2 duo's since they are completely un-tested from DD's side of things (called on Friday Sept. 8, 2006). They can't recommend anything that has to do with C2D. They did say that anything custom built should follow the recommendations on their website as closely as possible. i.e. no non-working chipsets, etc.

Additionally I have spoken to one of Toronto's PT Guru's. His opinion was to be safe and stay away from the SLI boards for now. Stick with Intel chipsets.

Here's a suggestion from me: let's see what the P5B does over the comming weeks. Any takers?

My perspective should be updated by September 16, 2006. Hopefully we will hear back from some of the other 3l337-8leederz out there by then as well.

Enjoy the weekend.

I believe the only mobos they support have Intel 955X and Intel 945P chipset. I think Asus don't have a Core 2 Duo compatible 955X motherboard. But they do have P5LD2 and P5LD2 SE (P5LD2 Deluxe?) witch are 945P chipset boards. These boards don't have DDR2 800 MHz support.

I don't know how these SLI boards have worked with intel but with AMD they have been great with ProTools. See the under 600$ machine in the "Best desktops for PTLE" thread. It has the Asus A8N-SLI recommended with 002R. Has the nForce4 and nForce 500-series been bad with Intel?

I agree: The Asus P5B looks like a winner. Let's keep fingers crossed that it runs smooth!

Soon we know what the Core 2 Duo can do with PT!

Hey

I agree - the P5B and P5B Deluxe do look like the winners at this stage. Here's a thought for you though. The recommended MoBo for AMD is an A8N-E which uses an Nvidia Nforce 4 Ultra chipset. Logically, one would think that the Nforce 4 SLI would be based on the Nforce 4 Ultra - so ...
The chipsets (and MoBo's) that this may add to the equation are:

P5ND2-SLI
P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe

Hmmm ...

Intel 6700 core 2 Duo
Asus P5WDG2-WS Motherboard (975 chipset)
Asus EN7950GX2 (Nvida) graphics controller
2 GB Ram PC800
Dual Monitor setup
Windows Xp pro SP2 + all security patches clean install.
Only non-standard Bios setting is to recognise the PC800 memory as PC800 (not autodetected)
Running PT 7 LE with Digi-002

Seems to work fine - everything very smooth i can switch away from PT to other applications and it keeps playing ( was never able to do that on a p4 3.0 Ghz before even with less than 10 tracks)

Loads quickly and doesnt have that clunky " i'm about to hang" feel any more.

Mike

I have kept up with this one from the beginning and I am about to take the plunge.
I am going with the 965 chipset. Fingers crossed.

E6600 core 2 duo
Asus P5B

I'll let youi know how it goes.

How cool is this? And I said I was in this for the adventure. All the way from a lean E6300 on an Asrock with via chips to an E6700 on the Asus with Intel 975, and so many people ready to build that I think I'm losing track. Please let us know how you are all doing, and if time allows run the davec tests. It will help us all know if we are really getting the most out of these things. The only real benchmarks available will be the one's we set.

Power to the People, Bob
