Default ProTools Blackout ?

new G5 1.6 about a month ago and now a very strange thing occurs. When working in PT, not just play or record but doing anything... the computer just shuts off!!!!! Screen goes goes completely black and everything powers off!!!

i have switched ram, a new power conditioner, new G5 uniprocessor firmware which forced me to go to 10.3.5

gonna try the quartz extreme thing as in turning it off but not confident about that possible fix.

just running the standard plugs... waves diamond, McDsp, OxfordEQ, AurExcitr

any ideas??????

happens about 5-6 times a day with no warning. its like somebody is pulling the power plug.

Have you disabled all power management options?

This sounds like a thermal issue.. make sure your computer isn't over heating.

i thought it might be thermal. The g5 was in an isobox but i pulled it out and its just sitting behind the console now. Ive checked fans and all seems to be ok. The studio is quite cold as well.

i tried another set of ram with no luck. Im now going to eliminate one of my firewire drives that is what i think all of these sessions have been playing from.

i'll get rid of any power management just to be safe. I started to time(stopwatch) how long it took and found out that it is seemingly random.

be back soon

did you recently connect more stuff to a Uniterrupted Power Source/battery backup unit? this happend to me when i put 2 computers on one unit ... one of them a new unit. despite the fact that i have 2 voltage regulators feeding my studio, my computer went out when i went to select a region. i bought another unit and have been ok.

don't know if it is your situation, but a thought to consider.

no UPS here. Building has balanced tech power.

I removed a firewire drive from the equation that might be a common source. So far its been playing for about 30 minutes and still running.

i removed all but the bare digi plugs but that didnt help.

to be continued...
