Wind Tunnel quiteing/mobo successes?
I'm considering buying one of the new-old OS9 bootable, dual 1.25Ghz/120GB/512MB/Superdrive Macs. I know they're really my only choice if I want to run PT 5. And from what I've seen here, the smart money may be on PT 5 for at least a few more months.
So I'm left with two last questions: do the $20 power supply upgrades fix the problem of hair-dryer like sound levels of these Wind Tunnel Macs? And did anyone ever NOT resolve the 001/motherboard incompatability issue through Applecare as a last resort?

can't say much about the noise... but i'd recommend finding a dual 1GHz Quicksilver. hate to say it but i wish i had when i bought my dual 1.25.

Re: Wind Tunnel quiteing/mobo successes?
I just did about two hours worth of searches on www.g4noise.com. In the end it really looks pretty bad for the Wind Tunnel Macs, even with power supply replacement and especially under OS9. Contrast that to the post above, and the posts saying that I'm crazy to go to a PT6-only Mac and this is really a choice between the lesser of two (or three) evils. As I've said before about this situation...what a bummer.
Secondspassed, I don't know, I can't imagine spending $2,100 on such an old Mac (which Smalldog.com has in-stock). Do you have the old 1.25 or new? Dual boot or OSX-only? Can you elaborate a bit more on your sentiments?

Re: Wind Tunnel quiteing/mobo successes?
I have a MDD 867 DP and the power supply replacement quieted it down considerably. It's not really louder than my Imac (just a deeper throatier tone.) But - when you boot into OS9 it is much louder and the fans have that telltale oscillation. I have a Quicksilver 800 DP at work and it was the first Mac I worked on that I would consider really noisy. I also have a MDD 1Gig DP at work and am looking forward to installing the power supply replacement kit. It really makes a lot of difference. G4noise.com is a great site but it also seems like a slight manipulation to get people interested in the Verax noise kit that was supposed to ship in April...

Re: Wind Tunnel quiteing/mobo successes?
I've installed the power supply kit in my dual 867, and it's made a huge difference! I can actually hear the hard drive clicking now. In my opinion, it's not much louder (if at all louder) than a comparable pc (i've got one of those sitting next to it), and it doesn't seem much louder then my friend's quicksilver.
