For anyone who is having the random white noise burst / random distortion problem
My system: Macbook OSX 10.5.8, Mbox2,
i had the problem as soon as i installed 8.0 and it persisted all the way to update 8.0.3 Solution that worked for me (for good i hope) I unchecked "minimize addition I/O latency" in the playback engine options. Yup thats all it took to fix it for me, go figure  hope that helps anybody who is wasting their time updating/troubleshooting haha. Everything is sounding nice and clean again..AHHHhh

Maybe you have installed an unauthorized PLugin such as IK Multimedias CSR (Classic Studio Reverb) ? That will make such random noise too.
