Default USB can\'t handle 48v?

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find it on the site. up until now I have been using dynamic mics, But when a friend plugged in his condenser, and I clicked the 48v, all the lights on my Mbox flashed and then shut down. (gulp!) I've since tried it twice with the same results. A message appears in the bottom left corner of my screen saying that my there had been a power surge that exceeded the limits of the USB port. HUH!? I thought I was rocking the standard 4 pin USB 2.0 connector I didn't know there were different voltage capabilities. What does this mean? Can I upgrade my the voltage cap of my USB. What's going on?

If your built-in USB port can't handle the power (or your computer's power supply is rated too low)... then use an external powered USB hub.
