Default About Zero crossings

I understand that a zero crossing is where the amplitude of a waveform = -inf. What I don't understand is what the direction means and if there is a problem with edits that don't retain the alternating pattern.

Can anyone shed some light?

Forget all that stuff...either cut in the middle, and if you cant...listen to it. If it crackles/pops...make a very short/fast crossfade (3 milliseconds or so..maybe even less). If it doesnt crackle/pop...its fine...

What you HEAR is what counts...not what you see...

Granted what you hear counts is whats important, but does anyone actually know the meaning behind zero crossings and 'alternating' waveforms?

i think its like this:

above the middleline its positive and belwo its negative. Its simple the representation of electricity, and audio is always done in AC...because it alternates a lot.

What happens if you cut on a different location as the zero-crossong, and you dont mask it with a quick fade is that the speaker has to jump suddenly to the new location. This simply cant happen because of lawas of physics, but it will produce a pop.
