It depends, and the answer is either simple or complex...

Simply: objectively speaking, no difference using the same plugin if available as RTAS and TDM, and the coding is the same.

Complex: Yes- there is a difference. TDM is a different world. Computations done within the TDM mixer (including the TDM Mixer plug-in) are done *differently* than host based. HOW different is it? That is where "objectively speaking" comes in; it is opinion.

Change the question a bit; which format has the best plugins?

Once again, objective. All in the ears of the beholder. Personally, I have many TDM only plug-ins that have no RTAS version, or have simplified/cut-down RTAS versions. Example: ReVibe. Love this plug, and there is no RTAS version. TL Space TDM: yeah, there is a native version; but it cannot do as much/same things the TDM version can.

RTAS vs TDM is a valid question, but why ask? Curiosity? Or wondering about the value of a TDM system vs host-based? Or something else?

Curiosity: Hehehe...I think we all wondered this for that reason.
Comparing RTAS to TDM as far as value of a TDM system: Well, this question/curiosity brings the entire TDM concept into play, not just the plug-ins. TDM carries benefits galore, and quality of plugins is simply a given

SO- there ya go. SImple, and more complex answers. Maybe someone else will chime in with an even more complex, lengthier answer

2 Word for ya...

Delay Compensation!

Worth every penny for a TDM setup.

side-note:
Objectivity is independent of personal opinion. I believe you meant "subjective".

I've heard a lot about delay compensation. I'm not too familiar with the concept--could someone clarify on how the delay gets there in the first place?

Thanks guys.

sorry- Objectively was intended; objective should have been subjective.

For LE, there is no auto delay comp. *significant delay* is only added by certain plugins.

HD/TDM is a different story...different principle, sort of...
Plug-ins take time to perform the calculations; routing takes (miniscule amounts of) time; thus, to maintain phase/time relationships, all audio arriving at destinations must be time aligned...or should I say "time re-aligned"? ADC computes the delay incurred throughout, and re-aligns accordingly.

I'm sorry,
I "assumed" that it was a question of HD vrs LE debate.
I maybe read more into it than I should have.
However, "delay compensation" RULES!
