Default G5 firmware upgrade :recommendation

I can confirm that this update has solved the firewire issues on the G5 Dual 2.5Ghz .
I'm using one of these for my LE/002Rack rig, and before the update the rear port was unusable. (front port was better but still not 100%)

Both ports seem rock solid now

Hi Evil Jack,

Specifically, what problems were you having that the firmware update solved ? Was it the digital / hissing noise issue ?

You can read about my MBox and G5 noise issue at the following link -

Do you think the firmware update will help me ?

I am running a Dual 2.0 GHz G5 with 512 MB ram and OS X 10.3.4... What are your dual 2.5 GHz G5 system specs (OS version, RAM, etc...) ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi!
Dual 2.5 Ghz G5/512MB/OSX 10.3.6

I think the firmware update is only for recent RevB G5s (though I may be wrong).

As I said, my problems were specifically with firewire (poor connections to 002 - especially through rear port). Other users on this board have had the same issues. The upgrade also appears to solve loud fan issues for some...

Wasn't the digital/hissing noise to do with the PSU, which Apple were replacing (with a revised version) under warranty?

Good luck!

Well, I thought that it was ONLY a PSU issue too, but then I tried the MBox on 2 different friends Pentium 4 PC towers with quiet PSU's, as well as on another, 2nd generation, Dual G5 and the problem is there as well (although, admittedly, it is more present on my G5, which I will take up with AppleCare).

I have contacted Digi Tech Support via email with the whole story and have asked if I should get the MBox evaluated by an authorized service provider (there is one here in Montreal which I could bring it / send it to, depending on how these things work).

In the meantime, what do you think of this workaround:

I am thinking of borrowing a friend's mic preamp to feed signal to the MBox's input set to LINE, that way I will not have to crank the MBox's gain too near the last dot and, therefore, won't get this hissing...

Let me know...

Best regards !
