issues with playback/recording with midi controller
Hey everyone,
So I was watching those awesome videos on remixing and recording MIDI and such, that it motivated me to go out and buy a MIDI controller this weekend. I bought this thing (http://www.guitarcenter.com/M-Audio-...64-i1154547.gc) the M - Audio Keystation 88 key USB thingy. I'm running Windows XP, Protools 7.3.c5 (haven't updated to 7.4 yet) and have an M Box 2. The M- Audio MIDI keyboard plugs directly into a free USB port and it works fine. I can play things fine, but when I hit record the latency is terrible and the recording and playback clutters. Like insanely. I tried messing around with the play back sample levels... and it really didn't help. Or maybe I just don't know if I should increase them or decrease them... Also.... I know there is a way to get some type of midi controller and have it run through the MBOX 2. Is this a more precise and accurate way to record MIDI? And if so, how do I go about that process? Any help would be appreciated... I guess any help on configuring my computer to get accurate play back and recording with MIDI using this controller. Almost Thanksgiving! yay! Wondering why I just dropped 200 dollars on something that may not work , Parker |

Re: issues with playback/recording with midi controller
There may be a few different reasons why you are having issues.
While tracking, your HW Buffer should be set to he lowest setting you can set it to. You didn't mention much else about your system. If you are using a multi-core processor (Core 2 Duo, AMD x2, etc), and you haven't applied the Microsoft multi-core hotfix, it can cause MIDI clock problems.

Re: issues with playback/recording with midi controller
Thanks for the response My processor is an Intel Core Duo Inside... And what is hotfix? What does it do? I've seen it on posts around here... but I'm afraid to install things that I have no idea about. |

Re: issues with playback/recording with midi controller
The hotfix is an operating system upgrade that is necessary to solve problems with the MIDI clock that comes from Microsoft not writing XP to take advantage of multiple processors correctly.
Microsoft Hotfix If you are uncomfortable upgrading your computer yourself, take it to a computer professional. This update is necessary for using MIDI in Pro Tools (including the click track) with multi-core processors.
