Pre-roll?

I can't get pre-roll to work. Any troubleshooting suggestions?
Here is a description of what I'm doing: first I activate Auto input-monitoring. I activate the pre-roll, set it to 2 bars. I start recording, and it just records as usual without any pre-roll.

The pre-roll obviously isn't activated as no pre-roll indicator appears on the timeline, and pre-roll value I've typed in disappears once I press anything that isn't on the transport.

What am I doing wrong?

If you look at the transport, the pre- & post- roll will turn white with blue text when they are on and be grey when off. You can toggle it on/off using Cmd-K (mac).

Yep. I think I said I activated it. The pre-roll 'button' is white with blue text.

Is the pre-roll non-existent during playback too?

Are you hitting the enter key after entering the 2 bars in the pre-roll area? You have to hit enter after entering a number in a field like that or PT will not accept the entry.

Also a quick short cut is to option click with the selector in front of the record position to set the pre-roll to that amount and turn it on.

You could also use the Dynamic Transport feature under the options menu. There is a tutorial on using it on the Digidesign site in the video section. Dynamic Transport

Double click on the metronome icon in the transport and make sure pre-roll is setup properly.
