Default Can anyone explain the System Usage Window?

How in the world does this make any sense? How do I have a total CPU usage of 24% when the highest of any of my cores are 13% while many are at 0%?

My system CPU usage outside of Pro Tools shows to be 95% Idle.

Makes total sense unless you have something that's not suppose to be running. Need more information.

Can you please explain to me how that math works?

I would think it would be something like this:

1 + 13 + 2 = 16%/ 8 cores = Total 3%

I'm talking strictly about how the CPU window is doing math. I didn't just take a snapshot right at a CPU spike either. That is where it is sitting at. My point is that 24% vs 3% is way different. Is it that it is looking at the whole project somehow and factoring in that at some point I will need to use the 24%?

No need to get all uppity😊
My cores aren't always equal. I could careless about math. As long as she's humming.......
Need more information. Computer?Interface? OS? Etc..

Sorry SpinningDisk. I'm not intending to sound uppity. (I apologize if my tone came across that way)

I'm just trying to figure out how the math works in this window. I could make a video showing the screen shot. But I'm assuming this is how it looks for everyone. So I'm just trying to get insight on why the obvious math doesn't add up.

My experience has always been is that there is an inherent amount of CPU spiking in pro tools (try it on a slower computer and that number can easily be 50%) - this is usually caused by some plugin or other - reverbs and VI's are the highest contributors in my experience. The total is kind of the average of those spikes + actual CPU usage. I sort of correlate this to istat or Activity Monitor CPU usage which is usually less than PT total and more than the sum of the rest of the cores...

Makes sense. So does pro tools choke on the spikes? I'd assume so. Perhaps it is the VI I am using (Synthogy) instead of Pro Tools. I'll have to see if I get the same with all VI's. Are most of you seeing numbers that don't add up?

I've never understood it for the same reasons you outline here. The math has never made sense to me. On one project I hit the red zone on the meter but no one processor was over 50%. And the project ran just fine. I can't figure it either. Someone from AVID will have to explain exactly what its calculating.
