Default Sharing ASIO with multiple apps??

My question spawns out of an attempt to optimize my CPU for live performance. I have a 001 interface and 867 tower. I am attempting to use programs such as NI Battery, Reaktor, Max/Msp etc. I have built several patches/stand alone apps with Max and want to share my 001 interface with a slew of software synths and hardware synths (Max/MSP handles the the MIDI sequencing and audio inputs of the hardware) currently it is either I can run Max with ASIO and the other softsynths with Sound manager and then hear them seperately by switching from main out to monitor mode (on the 001). I know I can get it all to work fine by just using ProTools and DirectConnect but that chews up too much RAM for me. Ideas would be much appreciated including any experience with using ProTools Live; as far as stability goes I'm skeptical and can't have a system crash in the middle of a performace.

Thanks everyone who reads!!
