Default Upgrading my Mac Pro 3.1 - Need Recommendations

My trusty Mac Pro 3.1 Harpertown is overdue for a facelift. Since my sample drive just dies (1TB Seagate Barracuda 72k HDD), I've been doing research for the best thing to replace it with. Of course an SSD was the first thing I thought of. Then I discovered the SATA issue with the MacPro, So now I'm looking at a PCIe card to give me SATA III to get the full use out of an SSD. I need recommendations on what is the most intelligent way to go with this when on a tight budget.

I've heard something here on the DUC about the MacPro 3.1 being buggy with the PCIe SATA III upgrade thing. I don't know what to do at this point. I can't afford to upgrade the entire machine. Any info would be really appreciated. Thanks.

for a samples drive I would not worry about SATA3, the 300Mb/s of SATA2 is plenty for the relatively small samples to stream off of.
It's the Seek Time of the SSD that is what is going to be the biggest benefit over a spinner.
I would just get a 1TB SSD and adapter plate and put it were the old drive was

Thanks Craig F for your input!
What about SATA 3 for the audio drive? I also wonder if a 10,000rpm drive would be a big step up from my old 72k.
I'm still gathering information on the whole thing. I just want to help my old MacPro do a better job on my sessions as much as I can (or can afford).

10k spinner is nosier and generates more heat

I'm more than happy with WD Blacks for Audio on a SATA2 bus

Thanks again for your reply. If I got a new WD 1TB HDD SATA III like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita...dp/B00FJRS6FU/

would putting in an SATA III PCIe card be the thing to do to get the drive closer to that 6MBs spec? (Please forgive my ignorance if I don't have a clue here.)

good drive but a spinner will never come close to filling the SATA3 bus, never fill the SATA2 bus.

In fact it maxes out on SATA1 150Mb/s http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771434.pdf page3

Do you think something like this would work well in my computer?

I think SSDs are overkill for most audio applications
They are 4x the price per GB over a WD Black
Good drive maintenance/house keeping will keep a spinner performing fine for most applications
I do think SSDs make good choices for Boot and Sample drives

OK I think understand what you're saying. I'd like to replace both my boot drive and my samples drive with SSDs. I'll probably get a couple of Samsung 840 Pros (or EVOs) and either go with something like the Apricorn or, what probably makes more sense- a PCIe card that I can cable the two internal SSD drives into. I'll stay with HDDs for audio and back-ups. This looks like a good possibility too: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonne...es/TSATA6SSDE/
