One advantage of externals is you can take them down to the carwash...

I have windex with vinegar, and I used it to clean my keyboard... took all the finger sludge off the keys and now its shiny and white.

Maybe use a rag or paper towel lightly damped with rubbing alcohol.

...though I like the carwash suggestion!!!

In any case(now that I've stopped laughing....) I would never "clean" an audio drive. I would move or copy the sessions onto another drive or partition, then reformat the drive. Be forwarned that if your disc allocation is mixed up, or if you use Melodyne(which by default, saves audio to its own folder) or often import audio from other sessions, you should open each session and go File>Save Session Copy...and check the box for Import Audio Files. That way, it will create a new audio files folder with every piece of audio, regardless of where the original audio came from.

And Diskwarrior. It's fantastic. "Cleaning" consists of rebuilding your file system database and catalog, which is essentially "Defragmenting" your hard drive. The best part is that you can use the graph function which shows you just how fragmented your files are, so you know wassa happenin.
