Default best ADAT 8 channel pre

Im ready to step it up from this digimax. I have it pretty much narrowed down either getting a audient asp008 or an apogee ensemble.

anybody have any opinions on the two? Or perhaps a better solution? I have about a 3k budget for better clock and a/d.

Apogee does sound great on its AD conversion.

Am just about to try out the focusrite ADAT bridge today as we have had three arrive, just putting expansion boards in now :)

A:)

I like the Audient. Maybe a tad too clean, but it's been real dependable and was a huge step up when I mothballed my Digimax. It runs a bit hot so leave a rack space open above it.

Hate to sound like a newbie, but is the adat out a better way to go than the light pipe??? (or are they the same?)

I am trying to add 8 more pre's but if I can get better pre's than the digi 003 that would be great \as well

thanks

Audient is a great unit for the price. Sounds nearly as good as other pres costing a lot more, and the conversion is pretty good too, from my experience of it.

My opinion (YMMV) is that most 8 channel ADAT based mic pres are similarly neutral. The target consumer is one that needs more standard mic inputs for everyday general purposes. If you want really good mic pres, you are probably going to need to go with 1 or 2 channel units through a high end A/D converter such as the Apogee Rosetta 800 or similar unit. You can also go in throught the 003's line ins (channel 5-8). There is no one size fits all solution. You need to match the source to the mic to the mic pre to the A/D converter, etc. Sometimes we get to hung up on the mic pre and hope that it will magically fix what is wrong with the rest of the chain or the room. While the mic pres on the DigiMax and the 003 are fine for drums or other instruments, I'll usually go through my Universal Audio LA610 for vocals and try different mics until I get one that brings out the best from the singer. I know this sounds like a "non answer" but it is my honest opinion.
