Default HFS or HFS+ disk format

recently read the General Setup post by Digi on OSX PTLE6 uses HFS+ only!?

Coming from OS9 and using HFS for audio files, and getting PTLE6
running on my machine, I have already recorded on a disk which has HFS
not HFS+

Is this just propaganda? or brainwashing? or ....

If there is a distinct advantage of HFS+ over HFS can someone
please educate me? Thanks!

No brainwashing.... This is straight from Apple's Knowledge Base. You definitely want to go with HFS+ (Mac OS Extended).

What is Mac OS Extended format?
Mac OS Extended format is a hard disk format that increases the number of allocation blocks on the disk. This format also allows more than 65,000 files on the hard disk. Mac OS Extended format optimizes the storage capacity of large hard disks by decreasing the minimum size of a single file.

What are the differences between Mac OS Extended format and Mac OS Standard format?
The most visible difference between Mac OS Extended format and Mac OS Standard format, other than the minimum file size, is the maximum number of files.

Hi,

HFS+ = better written files = more available space = more stability even when drive gets full.

One of the biggest advantage is (this is just an example, numbers not exact)

a 30 Gig drive formatted HFS results in 24 Gig of usable space.(ie:12 x 2Gig files will use 28.6Gig of space)

a 30 Gig drive formatted HFS+ results in 28.6 Gig of usable space.(ie:12 x 2Gig files will use 24Gig of space and leave an extra 4.6Gig of free space.)
