Default Slow compared to Rumpus FTP?

Has anyone ever noticed their digidelivery not being able to maintain the same consistent high speed, for close/local transfers, as the rumpus ftp server running on a mac?

Our internet connection is 10Mbps metro ethernet. We are located in san francisco. File transfers to other locations in San Francisco via rumpus ftp sustain the full 10Mbps (1.2 MBps) throughout the entire transfer. When transferring the exact same files via digidelivery, transfer speed bounces between ~ 5Mbps and 8Mbps (640KBps - 1MBps). This is a massive, massive speed difference for big file transfers.

Transfer speed depends on many factors. You said "the same files". What matters isn´t only your uplink speed but also the recipient´s download speed. Doesn´t matter how far away the recipient is. Transfer will only be as fast as the slowest connection between you and the recipient.

The essential speed is measured by the time it takes to transfer a given file from A to B. Not the Mbit figure.

Since DD has in-line compression the Mbit figure doesn´t really tell you how long you have to wait for the transfer to complete.

For a real comparison try this:

Measure the time it takes to upload your file to an FTP server plus the time it takes to download to a recipient.

After that send the same file via DD to the same recipient. Including up and download.

After that you see what was faster FTP or DD.
