Default Destructive Punch & Transport Record Lock - NEED OPINIONS

Not with clients today, so I decided to go crazy and try 12.3. After a couple of hours, I noticed that one of my favorite stem-recording workflows was broken. While in destructive punch, transport record lock doesn't stay locked. I logged a support case with Avid, and they rapidly responded:

Quote:
Hi Nathaniel,

It is normal for Transport Record Lock to be unavailable when in destructive record. Take a look at the feature's description on page 103 of the Pro Tools reference guide linked to your help menu in Pro Tools. It mentions that the option is not available in destructive record.

From what I recall this is the way the feature has always operated. Please let me know if you have any addition questions.
Wow. It was a bug that I thought was a feature. Now I'm confused. Every version of Pro Tools that I can remember up until now stays locked. I love the confidence of knowing that every time the transport is moving, I'm updating my stems.

So here are my questions:

1.) How many of you work this way, and how many of you would be bothered by this new (lack of) functionality?

2.) Do all of you re-enable record each time you destructively punch into stems?

Thanks for your thoughts.

That was may main workflow before PT11 introduced offline bounce.

So it always worked like that. Destructive Punch + Transport Record lock and to be super safe a seperate Solo bus...

The offline bounce workflow with 11 and 12 is buggy since it doesn't handle ADC properly. I just opened a case for that.... (I started using a plugin with a huge delay and suddenly my mixes would be up tp 4 frames late...! worst case scenario)

I actually wanted to go back to the destructive punch/record lock workflow...

Ironically, the DP/Rec Lock workflow is actually faster than offline when you're right at the end of a mix because it takes so much time for even a brand new Mac Pro to write all those mixes offline.

As soon as I've made my last punch (often across 44 re-record tracks), I can export my session or audio to the network. Done.

Made: I forgot to mention, if you work this way, and you set your solo mode to AFL/PFL, it won't screw up your stems if you solo during DP.

Yeah, I love working this way. Did they mention why they disable this functionality? Why not give people the choice?

No reason was given except quoting a page in the reference manual. But this is the exact reason why I'm making a fuss here. In every version of Pro Tools before 12.3, you could choose to work this way or not. Now, you can't choose.

Reported on Friday, logged for a fix on Monday. Avid support is good. They're going to fix this:

Hi Nathaniel,

I'm sorry for my confusion. Destructive punch should be working and is not in 12.3. We are working to resolve the issue and hope to have it resolved in an upcoming release.

Thanks for your patience with this issue while we sort this out.
