What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
I'm getting ready to remix a stereo album into surround and I'm curious to get some user feedback on which surround reverbs are working well for music remixing.
If you have been using a particular surround verb that you like - can you drop me a few comments on why? Also curious if if anyone has comments about just using standard stereo verbs (panned f/r) vs. purchasing a dedicated surround verb. Pro and Cons? Thanks for any feedback. -Mark |

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
i tend to use stereo reverbs in surround work. There are many ways to look at this from different theoretical or philosophical points of view, but the bottom line for me is that 5.0 reverbs take up too much dsp, whether it is a plug in or a system 6000. Stereo reverbs panned where you want them work just fine, i think. One day, when i have more than a single 6000 and/or and HD Accel 3 in front of me, i will consider the merits of a surround reverb, but until then, i consider them uneccesary.

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
Thanks Tom. Thats pretty much what guessed. I've got TL Space, True Verb and ReverbOne so I feel like I'm in good shape (wish we had a 6000 tho...). Have you played with Revibe at all? I don't currently have any Accel cards - do you think it's a requirement for surround mixing? I don't plan on needing that many Surround Panners - most of the elements will be routed via sub paths to discrete speakers and pairs.
if you have any feedback on Revibe - would be curious to hear. thanks again, Mark |

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
Surround reverbs are great for creating rooms or spaces where you want the listener to feel that he is "inside" the room. In sound design for drama, this is sometimes very effective. Still, the general rule seems to be that it is the front image (L, C, R) that is the most important sound field, with the surround speakers to add a little atmosphere and effects. However, if you let too many things happen in the surround channels, they tend to steal too much attention from the front (where the pictures are).
With multichannel music, I think it is still too early to really make any rules. I have heard (SACD and DVDAudio) multichannel mixes of music that are using L and R with just some additional sounds or reverb in the surround speakers, and I have heard mixes with sounds all over the place. It depends on the musical genre, but also on how well the mix is done. Everything is possible, you just need to know why you are doing what you do Stereo reverbs are great for multichannel mixes, too. I sometimes use a stereo reverb in the front speakers and add a second stereo reverb in the surround channels (with the mix volume not that hot), and with some musical sounds and effects, it can be great. However, if I really want to create a feeling of being inside an accoustic room (like a church), using a dedicated multichannel reverb like AltiVerb, is the right solution. Helge K. |

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
I've done a number of 5.1 mixes recently using Revibe and have been very happy with the results. It's definitely one of my current favorites.

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
another thig to consider when using 5.0 reverbs is how they fold down to LT/RT or even stereo. you can encounter big suprises with some reverbs. but you will notice when you do your tv-downmix.

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
Resurrecting an old thread here...
Is there some way to fold down a 5.0 reverb for a simultaneous stereo mix inside the same session? This may not be the ideal thing to do with potential phasing; won't know until I try it. I'm using a mono-to-5.0 TDM ReVibe on a Mac Pro running PT 7.3.1 HD3. My plan right now is to create another aux with a mono-to-stereo ReVibe and feed it the same mono bus, but I was wondering if I could avoid using a second ReVibe-- just fold down from the 5.0 aux. |

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
Waves 360 Bundle. I use it all the time. However, I'm dying to dump Waves completely, and am hoping that Digi will see the light and build the functionality into PT.
Good luck, S.

Re: What is your favorite Surround Reverb?
By the Waves 360 Bundle I assume you mean folding down the entire mix. I was curious if there's a way to fold down just a 5.0 Aux.
This really is academic at this point, though. The way to do this properly is to mix the surround version and fold down the entire mix like you suggest with the Waves 360. Guess I've hyjacked this thread. It was quite old, so I assume it doesn't matter. |
