OT: Bass Pickup's

ok so I haven't been the happiest with my bass tone anymore
i have been using my Fender Standard Jazz Bass then during a
session on friday we pulled out my Mark Hoppus Signature bass
with the Seymour Duncan Basslines SPB-3 Quarter Pound Precision Bass Pickup
and the tone is amazing. it kicks the sh*t out of the Stock
pickups in the Standard Jazz Bass.
but, I like playing the Standard Bass More so i'm trying to decide
what pickups i want. the only passive Pickup Seymour Duncan has is
the Vintage Jazz Bass Pickup and i was wondering if anyone has every
used this one.

and just one thing about it. the description says that the neck pickup
is reverse wound, so it reverse's the polarrity to cancel hum if i'm using
both pickup's at the same time,, but wouldnt that also create a comb filter
and take out a lot of the low end?(and other freq's too)

I have a Peavey Millennium bass that I replaced the stock pickups with the Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazz bass pickups. It did make a huge difference in the sound. Granted, the Peavey bass is not exactly a great guitar, but it suits my purpose and now it sounds like a much more expensive bass. I haven't noticed any low end loss by using both pickups at once, but there is less hum and external noise. The bass has so much more clarity of sound now. It's hard to describe the exact difference in the sound, but it does appear to be fuller without sounding overbearing. I also just put some Seth Lover pickups in my old Les Paul to replace the Dimarzio pickups I put in about 20 years ago. I can only describe that sound as eargasmic. When I was younger, I was into much heavier music and replaced the stock Gibson pickups in an early 70's Les Paul with a Dimarzio PAF and a Super Distortion Humbucker. Now that I am older (and wiser?) I wanted to try to get something back in it closer to the original sound so I went with the Seth Lovers. I think I would probably put Seymour Duncans in any guitar I get from now on since I am so happy with both of these.

Try Pluging your bass into something like a Sansamp bass DI or a Countryman DI and It will give your bass alot more tone options without changing your pickups. The bass I play now has MEC pickups and they are the hottest pickups I have ever played, almost to hot. They use 2 nine volts thats 18v out of the guitar, alot of stuff will not handle it even with the trim pot turned all the way down inside the guitar.
I had to sell my Hartke head because it was overdriving the preamp.

Anyhow I have had good luck with some stock passive pickups with the Sansamp DI.

I have a Sansamp RBI and i love it. The sound out of my stock pickup's
is not bad at all/ but the bassline pickups in my Other bass are just
amazing sounding

i think i'm gonna go for the Basslines Vintage Jazz Bass pickups

I changed the preamp-tube (a "12ax7") to a less sensitive one(a "12au7")...

I have a Fender Mexican Standard Jazz bass like yours and I replaced the stock picks with Fender Custom Shop 60s pickups and it made a huge difference without being overly hot. It's a subtle thing but you notice it. The notes are fuller and sit better in the mix without a lot of EQ.

Hey that is good to know. I used more of the solid state pre on the Hartke and blended the tube though. It was realy just an excuse to buy my David Eden rig Talk about killer tone.

It almost sounds like you just enjoy the sound of a P-bass more than the sound of a Jazz Bass. There's nothing wrong with that - they're totally different sounds. You might want to check into a P-bass Special, which has the standard split P-pickup in the neck position and a Jazz pup in the bridge position. It also has a jazz neck, which has a thinner profile than the p-bass neck, so you might enjoy playing it as much as you enjoy playing your Jazz Standard. If I'm drawing the correct conclusions from your post, this could give you the tone AND the playability you want.

the Mark Hoppus Bass is a Jazz Bass with a P bass Pickup
but i dont like the idea of playing live with a signature bass anymore
but for recording it's not a big deal to use it. which i'm gonna start doing now
