Hmm, good idea.

Are these new Macs gonna have the Nehalem boards or perhaps a new gen. board with a cool name always?

I wonder what kind of increase in speed we'll see on the Quad(2.93GHz entry level, then...)? What about the 8-core ones?

November seems so far away... I need a Mac Pro bad... I'm on a 2.33GHz MacBook Pro still... Poor thing chokes...

Having used a late 2006 iMac before, I just bought a 2008 8-core, and I'm very happy with it. Except that the fans are a bit noisy (to me), due to the fact that it is a used one. So I would say a used one like this may perhaps (not necessarily) need a bit of cleaning (possibly fan replacing).

Also, you may want to replace the small fan of ATI 2600 (which is the default video card, known as a bit noisy one) with a passive cooler, such as Accelero S1 (rev. 2). You can do the cleaning etc. yourself, or if you're not that kind of guy, count +200-300 dollars in price, I'd guess.

In terms of CPU usage and such, you'll never ask, which one would have been the better choice. These machines are so performance wise; amazing, indeed.

Well, it looks like we have settled on a PowerMac G5 2.5GHz quad-core that comes with 4Gb of RAM and 500Gb hard drive. I plan on upgrading the hard drive and upping the RAM to 8Gb. What kind of performance can I expect with PTLE 8 on it?

IMHO, I wouldn't buy any model of PPC (quad core or otherwise) at this time. Particularly if you expect to continue to use new software.

PowerPC has reached the end of its line. Regardless of how powerful you make it, there is continually more and more software that is dropping support for PPC. I expect PT and its 3rd parties to follow suit.

You'd be much better off getting an early generation Mac Pro, rather than a late generation G5. Aside from that, it's not going to be more than another year or so before we see "the worlds first 16 core Mac." Mark my words.
