Recording Help :(
Im trying to record a guitar solo on pro tools, live I can get away with some of the parts but recording I am doing retake after retake to get it to sound right. Ive read in magazines and online that some bands will be in the studio and the enginner or producer will slow down the entire song record the part at half speed or desired speed, then once record speed everything back up to original tempo. I have pro tools le 8, does anyone know how to go about doing this, Ive tryed reading books at barnes and noble and google searching but nothing comes up. Please Help

Re: Recording Help :(
the quick and dirty way is to set all your tracks to "tick" based and then switch them all to the "Varispeed" elastic audio setting. Once it is done analyzing the whole song... change the BPM of the song to something slower. Everything will slow down, but will also drop in pitch. Check tuning, record at the slower tempo and then when done, put it back to the original tempo.
You can also use elastic audio in "polyphonic, rhythmic, and monophonic" modes across your tracks, that way when you slow down the tempo, everything slows down but DOES NOT drop in pitch. It might start to sound a little grainy, but once you speed it back up everything will sound correct again. Also, just to reiterate, you also have to turn on elastic audio on the track you are recording onto before you speed everything back up. |

Re: Recording Help :(
Shift-Command-Spacebar on Mac or Shift-Control-Spacebar on Windows will record half-speed. You would need to play the notes an octave lower, though, and that might sound weird (and/or good) when played back normal speed. The formants would be at the wrong place.
Another solution is to play to the click only and play at normal pitch but half tempo. Then edit the notes together at normal speed, preserving the last 30 or 60 milliseconds of each note so it sounds kinda natural. It's time consuming but it sounds a lot better than most time compression algorithms. Still, nothing sounds as good as just practicing until you can play it right up to speed. Or maybe just patch a few notes hear and there with the half-tempo notes.
