How do I make a sound sound like is underwater?

Anyone have a tip for making a sound sound like is underwater?

Also anyone have a good source for good water sounds? I need waves, boats sitting in water, and underwater sounds.
And a good movie to use a reference.

Take a normal recording of water (river, splashes, trickles, etc) pitch it down an octave or two and then eq out the high end with a steep roll off to taste. Works like a charm if you've got a decent pitch processor, a good high cut eq, and of course a clean recording.

maybe try loading sounds into a sampler - I use reason cos it came free- tho I liked it so much I went and bought the full blown version - more than just a sampler!

try varying the resonance annd frequency cut off - I think removing a few of the high's in this manner may help...

I have a set up in reason which basically is a sampler followed by the scream distortion - this unit has some radical fx, but there maybe some sublter settings in there that may help too in this case..

I also preconfiured some FX sends .....

You could also play around with some the echo's and reverbs...

most major cntrols are mapped to me control surface for tweakable fun!

that's just off top of my head..

You might check out sound ideas 6010, 6038, 6040, Prem edition cd 5, and the Hanna Barbera series 2 has some usable bits too- visit sound dogs to check em out

Hey Mark,

Sorry just realized that you didn't ask specifically for underwater sounds but that maybe you meant making other sounds like voices etc. sound like they're underwater. Haven't come across that much myself, but you could still try what I suggested just maybe not as drastic.

I also need to find a movie with good sound design for a reference.

If you have Waves, the MondoMod has a decent "Underwater" preset that can quickly be tweaked to produce some good FX. Add Eq to taste.
