Default RED ZONE

When I get the master fader to the level i need it to be loud enough to sound like todays recordings it usually stays in the red is this normal???

It's ok if it hits red on the loud peaks, but to get your final mixes up to level, you have to master them. Search here for more on mastering, there's been plenty of talk on that subject.

PT has a little bit of headroom built into their faders, plus there's some limiting going on there as well. Unlike other DAWs- you can push PT well into the red without any problems- harsh digital distortion. Although, it does crap out if hit way too hard. Some folks purposely push it into the red to work thos limiters. Others- just put in their own limiters like the Waves L1 to get things sounding "loud".
