Default distortion

So I'm happily recording, playing back, bouncing or what-have-you in my M powered PT9 when all of the sudden it plays with total distortion. Previously, I have seen discussions advising to click or unclick the "Host Engine" box in Playback Engine window (from dropdown"Setup" menu). This works temporarily, but I am to the point where its hard to get through a recording session. Any tips?
