Default PT LE 8.01 stopped working after MacOS 10..8 update on 09/02/2010

Macintosh dual PowerPC G5 2.0 Ghz - 6.5Gig RAM
OSX 10.5.8
Pro Tools LE 8.01
Digi 003 Rack interface

date: 09.02.2010

After OSX Update with following items
************************************************** *********
2010-09-02 14:52:38 -0400: Installed "Server Admin Tools" (10.5.7)
2010-09-02 14:53:20 -0400: Installed "QuickTime" (7.6.6)
2010-09-02 14:54:01 -0400: Installed "Safari" (5.0.1)
2010-09-02 14:55:10 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2010-005" (1.0)
2010-09-02 14:55:40 -0400: Installed "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7" (1.0)
2010-09-02 14:55:44 -0400: Installed "QuickTime Broadcaster" (1.5)
2010-09-02 14:55:45 -0400: Installed "Server Admin Tools" (10.5.7)
2010-09-02 14:56:34 -0400: Installed "iTunes" (9.2.1)
************************************************** *********

Pro Tools will no longer make it through launch. It get's to last section of the splash screen and crashes. (Pro Tools Unexpectedly quit)

The Digi003 seems to reset itself every other time or so when the program crashes.

I have tried/checked the following things.

Deleted all prefs files as recommended in the tech note (DAE Prefs, DigiSetup, etc...) empty trash/restart.

No help.

I've attempted to do a reinstall of the PT software starting with version 8.0 and intending to then upgrade back to 8.01. Cannot get new install to stay up long enouhg to enter in Auth Code. It still crashes in the Auth window.

Checked to make sure the Firewire port was disabled in the 'Network' control panel and is so.

This was a well working system for over a year prior to this mac os update.

any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Eric

How did you apply the update? Did you back up before doing so?

Unfortunately no. As I think about it, this update also had a qurik to it as well. The machine restarted after the update but hung on reboot and needed to be manually rebooted. Perhaps I'll see if I can find the update on the Apple site and reload it and see if it comes back.

As it stands now, I'm dead in the water.

Yeah I would try downloading the 10.5.8 combo updater from Apple and re-installing it.

Never use Software Update to update your OS (not sure if you did, but just putting it out there), the combo updaters are the safest way to handle such upgrades.

Bump and update:

reinstalled OSX update. Found some new issues.

I went back to an older computer to make sure the 003 interface was okay and it was. This older computer had a bad firewire port and I used a PCI firewire card on it. On a hunch I put the card into the newer G5 and Pro Tools will launch. It's flaky and cannot stay up for long and crashes out but does get farther than when the interface is connected to the Mac G5s firewire port.

I now suspect it might have something to do ith the internal Firewire port (hardware/software or combination of both.) either way Pro Tools will not stay running long enough to test.
