Default Peak problem

Hi,

I'm importing audio (wav, reference material converted with itunes) in to a session and it shows alot of peaking (red light illuminated) goin on. It should not, right? What am I doing wrong?

Itunes can't convert properly?

I use a Mac Pro, HD1 accel, osx 1.5.4.

Thanks.

The red light indicates that you have 3 or 4 continuous samples at 0dBFs. In your case the songs are mastered so loud, that you have long continuous samples hitting 0.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input.

Ok, but I thought that this was a major no-no in the world of pro-audio, I mean to do it deliberately. Does a lot of engineers do this? I for one would NOT!

Hitting 0dBFs does not necessarily mean it is distorting if that's what you mean by "I thought that this was a major no-no in the world of pro-audio".

I have found this with commercial drumloops etc aswell as mastered tracks.
I think that PT goes into the red slightly before you reach 0 dbfs, maybe as and extra warning.

DTS can you confirm this

If there is peaking in the original session then when you import them, it will show red in the meters for every channel that has peaked at one time or another. As already stated, that's not a problem if you are not distorting but it might be better to record your original tracks a little softer as they will sum anyway and plug-ins will increase gain on whatever channels you feel need a little bump.
