Default Workstation and audio interface through Pro Tools

Please Help!! I connected my VS 1680 workstation to the Scarlett 2i4 via midi. The 2i4 is connected to Pro Tools 12 HD. The audio interface recognizes the workstation but I am getting no sound or reading through Pro Tools. I believe my settings in Pro Tools not set correctly, or could it be that Pro Tools is not compatible with the 1680? Can someone help me out? Very frustrating...

I'm sorry I have more questions than answers. I guess my first question is what are you hoping for as an outcome?

Audio from the VS1680 into PT?
Control the VS1680 (transport?) from PT?
Control the PT transport from the VS1680?

Right now I think I know that;
a) you have connected your VS1680 to your Scarlet using MIDI (assuming MIDI out from the VS1680 to MIDI in on the Scarlet) this would enable you to send MIDI commands from PT to the VS1680 (via the Scarlet) and vice versa , providing it understands what it's getting and it's internal workings can be triggered in such a way.

b) you are getting "no sound or reading in Pro Tools". This would be normal as you haven't mentioned connecting any audio out from the VS1680 into an input on the Scarlet.

So here's an old link from someone that was trying to transfer files from their VX1680 into PT. It may be useful, maybe not...

bradch00 - Im hoping to record audio from the 1680 to PT through the 2i4 so I can mix and master my music. I currently have the 1680 RCA outs connected to the 2i4 RCA ins and no sound. I use to run my 1680 into Mbox2 via midi with Mbox plugged in PT. It worked perfectly.

Assuming installed Scarlet drivers are up to date/Compatible with PT12,

Open PT got to Setup>Playback Engine and make sure scarlett is selected as Playback Engine.

Then Setup>I/O Setup>Input Tab, click 'Default' button. Do same for output Tab. Click OK.

Does the I/O dropdown menu appear when assigning I/O on track?

I'm not familiar with Focusrite stuff, is there any proprietary software that needs to be set up in conjunction with PT?

If this doesn't help you'll need to supply more information about your system.

As to this question, unless you are recording more than two channels simultaneously, why bother using the VS-1680 at all?

I don't own a 2i4 but took a quick look at the manual, I don't see any RCA inputs in the diagrams. Where exactly are you plugging in? Front panel?

bradch00 - No, the RCAs are plugged in #1 and 2 on the 2i4. That might be my problem. What connections would i need to use for the front inputs? Should I try the 1/4 inch to dual RCA insert cable?

You are right zedhed. I will probably try recording straight into the audio interface and see what happens. Its real easy to drop tracks in the 1680 and record.

Glad to hear you are getting audio from your workstation. Is there a specific reason you need to record in the workstation? Long term, I would take zedhed's suggestion and record directly through the Scarlett into pro tools. I started out using a Yamaha workstation (12 years ago?), once you get used to tracking into PT you'll never look back. I would say for starters you would get a better sound as the newer converters in the Scarlett overall should be of higher quality. IMHO
