Default How to allocate memory?

I'm using a PowerMac G4 400mhz with the 001 and Protools LE. When I try to record more than 6 tracks at the same time the G4 tells me that I need to allocate more memory to Protools. How would I do this?

Thank You

Hello Smakrabbit,

1. Locate the Pro Tools application program . This is locted in the Digidesign folder that lives in the Mac hard drive.

2. Click the Pt icon only once. It should now be highlighted....then

3. Press Apple -i, and the Pro tools info box will pop up on the screen,....then

4. In the Show window, choose memory, then...

5. In the preferred memory, enter the new amount of memory that you want to re-allocate.,...then

6. Restart....and you're good to go...

I use 250,000

I would suggest you increase the memory by f.ex 20.000 first, and if the problems persist, another 20.000, and so on. There is no point to giving PT much more memory than it needs.

I'm guessing he meant restart PT-- not the mac.

There's no reason not to give your apps as much memory as you can-- the more the better. Things will generally run smoother with fewer bottle necks with more. Just make sure you leave enough for the system to run comfortably (80-100mb). Of course, this all depends on how much RAM you have to begin with.

You can also increase the amount of memory allocated to DAE (System/DAE Folder/DAE) using the same method.

The Mac DOES need to be restarted when changing memory settings of ANY kind in order for the new settings to take effect. I'm assuming we're talking about OS 9.

In OSX, memory is automatically and dynamically managed by the OS and there are no user settings that I can see so far...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">False. You only need to launch the applicaitonf or the new memory setings to take affect.

While having enough memory allocated to perform the tasks required, allocating mroe than that, at least to PT and DAE, we found was actually detrimental. We experimented with settings and found 250mb for PT and 200 for DAE to be optimum, and allocating more than 100mb over these marks resulted in decreased performance, while allocating more up to the 100mb over mark gave no increase in performance, all based on the DAVEC test.

Hope this is helpful.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Oops, so sorry... Wow,

I've been that for so long I never knew or checked that we don't need to do that anymore. I hope that, that could not have always been the case, right? If it is, then I sure restarted way too many more times in my life than I needed to…

I do know that you need to restart after making changes in the control panel, um, I think..
