Default Understanding the ADAT interface

I've a question regarding the ADAT interface...actually, it's a little debate I was having with a friend and I'd like to confirm something.

Am I right in thinking that data through an ADAT interface only goes one way?

For example, the Alesis IO26 interface has ADAT input but not output - therefore you can only get the audio IN digitally, but not OUT. He felt that you could somehow use the ADAT IN as an OUT somehow...

I understand this isn't an issue directly related to Pro Tools, but you guys seem to know you're stuff ans always prove helpful!

Thanks

ADAT is used for in and out. So when you add the octopre for example to a Digi 002R, you then have 18 channels of i/o.

Cheers

Yes, I understand that - and use that very unit myself - but what I'm saying is that you can't get IN and OUT down the one cable?

The Octopre has separate IN and OUT sockets whereas the Alesis OI26 only has IN.

What I'd like to confirm, is that ADAT will only travle one-way down a cable - IN OR OUT.

That right?

Some things are just too obvious.

Ok ok, I thought it was obvious too, but when my friend (who's opinion I generally respect) starting saying something different, it made me think.

Thanks for the confirmation, albeit a little cheeky...
