Default PT 12.1 Video Engine Problems

I've been running PT12 with no crashes until a few days ago. Now I'm getting regular waiting for video engine lockups ("Waiting for video operation to complete")and the odd crash.

No rhyme or reason for it. Pics are playing off a Samsung 850 EVO SSD. Mac OS X 10.8.5, Mac Pro 5,1 32 GB Ram 8 core Westmere, Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.2.3.

Driving me nuts. Anyone else having these issues?

Ray

I've encountered that error many times since I started using Pro Tools 11, more than a year ago. I'm sad to learn that the exact same error still exists. It's as if it hasn't been adressed at all.

I asked in another thread but never got an answer: What's the video engine version of Pro Tools 12.1?

12.1.0 = ?
12.0.0 = 7.0.3.1 (problematic)
11.3.1 = 7.0.3.1 (problematic)

How many videos do you have on that drive? Ave takes a while to load when you have a lot of videos because it scans them all before loading.

Ok that blows up that theory. Have you deleted databases lately? Not sure if ave uses databases in pro tools but I know media composer uses databases. FYI ave starts here in like 5 seconds.

Hi Brandon

Yes I have Pete Gates Pref utility and have used that several times but to no avail.

Sometimes the message "The Avid Video Engine was unable to stop" comes up in a dialogue box.

Other times pix and sound playback locks up, and then playback will not occur until I take the picture track offline and then I'm greeted with the "Waiting for Video process to complete" again.

OK so to try and eliminate some more variables, I uninstalled PT12.1 completely as per the AVID guidelines and ditched all plugins etc. The only other version of PT on my rig is v10.3.7.

Downloaded PT 12.1.0 from my user account and grabbed all the latest plugin versions (not a huge pile on this machine) and installed those. So it's a clean install from scratch.

First time the AVE fired up I got the error again. What's up? I need picture playback without these errors.

Although, I am on Pro Tools 11.3.1 I honestly gave up on this error and don't believe anymore that Avid capable / aware / able to re-produce / care about this issue.
When I see this error message, I try to relax and don't think about anything negative that can take me out of the creative mood in front of the clients.
When it happens, I just smile and say - Avid.

Here is the video to how to reproduce it in PT 11.3.1

Hi Michael

Thanks for posting that video. So that's PT 11.3.1?

What I see in PT12.1.0 is that when the Video engine stops I rarely get the message that "The AVID video engine was unable to stop". Usually the system just locks up and won't come out of it's holding pattern until I hit Shift-Command-J to take the pictures offline and then will either get the message above or the other one "Waiting for Video operation to complete". When that message is displayed, audio playback in PT is not possible. You have to wait for the progress bar to get to the end and then audio only playback is possible. Or put the pics back online and wait for the next occurrence.

And as someone else before had mentioned, the AVID video engine app is the same version number 7.0.3.1 as in PT 11.3.1

The only reason I harp on about this is that I do a lot of short quick playback passes as a Dialogue editor, and it seems the tools I've paid for can't keep up. I had exactly the same issues when I first bought PT11 a while back and that kept me from using it in the heat of battle on busy features. So that's two versions of PT HD that aren't cutting the mustard yet despite two lots of USD $599 injections from me since PT10.
