512 & 1028 here (Edit as I go)(VI & Vox)

Never 64 samples 128-256*(My would-be iDeal)

However. Currently running the best ever stability wise.

It would be nice to have a variety-voice count if tracking vocals didn't mean shutting down part of a session-sound due to latencies (HDX-1 system, 44.5KHz/32bf))

Could you explain this further? Are you saying that even with an HDX card, you sometimes still have latency problems if you have a lot of tracks playing back and you want to record at the same time?

Anything native, on an aux input or master fader, makes the system the same as a pure native system for the most part.

Yeah, ok...that makes sense.

That brings up another question: Does either lowering (or increasing) the H/W buffer size reduce plug-in latency during playback (no recording)? I suppose that - whatever the answer is - Delay Compensation makes it all better.

Remember... There is a dual buffer in PT12. Playback is always at 1024 for audio. And yes, ADC takes care of most of the potential timing issues.

The buffer selection in the Playback engine drop-down menu is for handling Recording and some MIDI/VI functions, etc.

There is more on this in the manual.

With HDX I have tested:

RECORD Enabled track with only AAX-DSP plugins + a send to
AUX track with Native Reverb
- the Direct signal from the REC enabled track is still independent of the DAW buffer
- the Reverb (in this case) is delayed by 2X the DAW buffer (not a bad thing).

I believe the same would happen no matter what the Native FX in the AUX was.

You are totally right though that any Native FX in the OUTPUT path (SubMaster or Master) of a REC enabled track will reduce it to being slightly more RTL than a straight Native system.

I have kept my buffer at 256 for the last three years without ever changing it. No matter how big the session is, I can always record overdubs without worrying about latency, as this is taken care of by the hdx audio mixer, not only for the main output, but also for cue sends to other outputs (in contrast to hd native).

You can see the latency on your record enabled tracks at the bottom of the mixer page (delay compensation). I mostly track without plugins on the record enabled tracks, but you can surely add AAX-DSP Plugins without major problems. You want to avoid routing the record enabled tracks through busses, but it can be done.

If you have a really huge session with lots of native plugins, you can set the buffer to 1024, but if you are using UAD stuff, you will hit the delay compensation limit rather soon.
