Head Phone Delay
Any one know of an effective way, (other than not using plug-ins, not bussing audio, and setting Hardware Buffer Size to a minimum) to eliminate Headphone delay to talent. It;s baffling that this is such an issue. I know you could monitor phones thru a console before protools, but let's say you would like to feed a bit of reverb to a singer... once a plug-in is used, the delay can be ridiculous. Obviously Delay Compensation is set to Max, but this has no practical effect anyway

Re: Head Phone Delay
First make sure the headphones are wired as bluetooth or wifi headphones add a lot of latency.
Secondly take all effects of the Master Output. Third, check in the Mix window the latency you are seeing on all tracks. Any in the red, you need to remove plugins. Find the orange one and see what the latency is, that's the worst one. Then, if all else fails, make inactive all possible plugins except what the artist actually MUSt have and try to avoid using auxes. |

Re: Head Phone Delay
Yes.. Thanks.. I do all that.. It is just VERY limiting (no pun intended) to remove all plugins and no bussing. This studio just removed all consoles as part of an upgrade.. .Not sure that was a wise choice.

Re: Head Phone Delay
What Pro Tools system are you using? Native or HD Native? And how powerful a computer?

The combination of computer components & Audio interface will play a major part in how much latency is present and what can be done about it. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun0...kshop_0606.htm

Re: Head Phone Delay
So it seems if I simply take the plug-ins off the master, it's just fine.. Looks like the problem is solved.. I can either make an alt master with no plugins.. or gene go without one, for recording, and then mix with whatever I need. Thanks folks!

Re: Head Phone Delay
Run at the lowest buffer your computer will handle(lower buffer=less latency). Select the show Latency Compensation in the MIX window and look at what your plugins are doing. Plugins can have anywhere from zero, up to several thousand samples of latency. By knowing what plugins are "guilty", you can avid those during tracking, or substitute others(like using BF76 during tracking and swapping to that other compressor with 3000 samples AFTER all the tracking is done. Always run your reverb plugins on AUX tracks and set for 100% wet(no dry signal)(instead of inserting on an audio track). You should also disable delay compensation while tracking.
