I'm a huge fan of etymotics. Look at the HF series for a start. They're about $100 and fabulous for that price. Just make sure you get the right tips on them so that you get a good seal. You'll be amazed how much detail you hear.

If you are on a tight budget, Sweetwater has a good sale going on this weekend on these:
Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Studio Headphones - Closed
Closed-back Circumaural Headphones with Folding Design and 32dB of Acoustic Isolation

Sale ends tomorrow, if you are interested.

As much as I love Etymotics (I own several including the wonderful ER-4) for just messing around with a guitar I'd go with the close back HD 280 that Bruce pointed to.. unless you already know you really like in-ear headphones.

As for all rigs sounding the same, that is clearly a nonsensical statement. Since you have a huge variety of rigs present, with lots of different effects. And we can't tell what type of guitar, pickups, outboard effects/pedals etc. you are trying to play with or more importantly what monitors, full range speakers, guitar cab etc. you are listing to this through or whether you have something just setup up plain wrong (like cab effects turned off on a full range monitors/speakers). If you want actually useful advice you'll need to provide much clearer questions that somebody can actually sensibly reply to. Like what exact type of rig are you looking for, what exactly are you finding that you don't expect/is disappointing etc. What exact two or more rigs sound surprisingly alike etc. Exactly how you have things wired together, etc.

I personally do not get the fascination with rig presets. You need to play around a lot to get what you want, just like any gear. In my case my Eleven Rack rarely plays anything but a JTM-45, 68' Plexi or Black Duo. A suitable (usually low-power cab), Reverb and some EQ.

I got a set of these awhile back, the price got me thru the door....but honestly these have too much HF in them. They need a built in Desser

DT770Pro's so neutral

+1 on the Beyer Dynamic DT 770 pros. Awesome cans if you want to spend a couple hundred. I really like mine. I also can't stand the HD 280's, way too much hi end, and just sound plastic to me. But in the hundred dollar range, the old standard AKG K 240's still beat anything I've tried in that price range. A studio standard for decades for a reason.

Also check out Audio technica's ATH M50's. Reasonable price point and fantastic sound. I haven't tried every headphone available but these are the best ones I have owned by far

Just saw in an email that the DT-770's are on sale today at Guitar Center's site for $129! A hundred dollars off for Cyber Monday! Super no brainier deal!

one thing on the 770s you'll want the low impedance version (32 ohm, I think) over the high impedance ones (600, maybe 400)
