Default Issues with creating fades on external monitor?

Here is a strange issue - when I try to create any type of fade in or fade out (Command-R or through the edit menu), it absolutely does not work when the edit window is on my external screen. However, if I move it back down to my main screen on my Macbook Pro, it works fine! Has anyone seen this issue before? FYI I'm on macOS Mojave for a late 2017 for a 15" 2018 MBP. Very perplexed by this issue and super frustrating to move my edit window whenever I want to create a fade!
