Yes. Each amp has a gate on it and it applies even if the amp is bypassed.

Page 34 of the manual.

There's a threshold and release value that can be set.

Now you know it CAN be done, so I have to ask why you want to do it? As an engineer of 30+ years(both live and studio), gating a vocal has never worked well for me. What are you wanting to accomplish?

Hi albee1952,

I'm just an enthusiast and recording in a less than ideal environment with street noise outside. I thought a gate might help this. However, given the vocalist will open it, I suspect this only going to work when he's not singing?

Don't bother, just use Dyn3 Expander/Gate as an insert or whatever gate plugin comes with the DAW you have.

It would likely help, but you should consider the impact of recording (printing) with effects since it can be very difficult to fix something recorded incorrectly. In my experience, the ER's Gate is most useful live, and it's safer to record dry and then add effects or edit the audio later. My typical MO is to capture as much complete/isolated/unaffected data as possible knowing it's easier to cut out or modify stuff later than it is to recreate it. For example, recording with a gate might result in cutting off the head or tail of something if the gate isn't set correctly, but you could instead record it dry then add a gate or use noise reduction later. Street noise can be especially challenging since it can be so random so I'd want some time and options to try and fix it later. Maybe try amagras' suggestion of a Gate as an insert on the track (since that isn't destructive), but even better if you can improve your space to eliminate or at least reduce the noise.

Start by trying to improve the isolation from the noise. If the room has windows, build some frames that fit snug into the frame on the inside, fill the frame with rock wool insulation and cover with fabric. Then hang curtains that are made with moving blankets, or other sound-blocking material. Use a good shock-mount for the mic and maybe look into the Aston Halo or other similar "portable vocal booth). Lots of home studios are able to make a decent iso-booth in a closet(if the closet isn't too small) Maybe you should make a compromise by going with a mic that has a tighter pattern and more rejection, like something designed for live use(Nuemann KM105?)
