Default All kinds of Pro Tools/Asio issues

hey everybody,

I've been lurking around for a bit and I figured it was time that I actually make a post here. Back in January, I bought PT 9 for my laptop (Dell studio w/ windows 7). This was the first time I had bought my own Pro Tools software, but I've used it plenty of times before. After downloading the ASIO software, I saw that PT was recording and getting sound in through the mic, but it keeps saying that it can't identify any outputs. Is this because I'm not using an interface? It was my understanding that 9 could work without one. Since then, I haven't had the time to really get into it, so I've had software on here that I haven't been able to use...

I imagine there's all kinds of information here, but I don't even know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

9 still needs an interface, it just doesn't need an Avid/Digidesign interface. Try ASIO4All and your laptop's soundcard.

Cheers,

Cheers,
While this should work, its hardly ideal. You want some kind of interface. Let us know what you can afford, and we will toss you some recommendations. Also let us know what you need to record. If you wish to record a drum kit, that will mean different recommendations over just vocals and acoustic guitar or piano.

albee,

I was just trying to get him going with some audio - then help him spend his money.

Good advice as always from yourself.

Cheers,

well, I downloaded the ASIO software, and I'm still not getting any output.

I plan to use Pro Tools more for mixing than anything else. I still tend to record stuff to reel to reel or cassettes, so I'd just be digitizing the tapes. I also have some tracks I made in a studio last year that I still need to mix. I probably will have some extra cash to pick up an interface. If I start using Pro Tools to record, I'd be making anything from field recordings to guitars and drums. Any thoughts?

I highly recommend a 1st generation M-Audio MobilePre. There is a seller on ebay selling them for $74.99, and I got Guitar Center to price match that. You simply won't find an interface with 2 mic ins, 2 instrument ins, and phantom power for less than that, new with warranty. I had some issues with static and crackling when I first started using it but a clean install of windows and PT9 fixed it and it's working flawlessly. It would likely work just fine for you right out of the box, and for $75 shipped, it can't be beat if you're really on a budget and just need an interface to mix with and have the capability of stereo recording.
