Default Tracking in HDX 64 Bit vs 32 Bit DSP

Some thoughts on the subject ... I have McDsp and Sonnox plugs is there any advantage to DSP tracking in 64 Bit in PT 11HD vs. 32bit in PTHD10.3.6. My ProControl still works in 10.3.6.?
Thanks,
M

Good question(after I read it a few times and finally understood). I have seen a few reports claiming that 11 sounds better, so I would say its worth an experimental session find out for yourself

No. I think you're confusing PT11 being a 64bit APP and 32 bit recording.

App., not 32bit recording. Both Sonnox (will ?) and McDsp (does now) offer 32 and 64 bit plugs which run as AAX DSP in both Pro Tools PT11 HD(64bit app.) and PT 10.6.3HD(32bit app.). Both have floating point. Does a 64 bit plug have a sonic value. I will test but just want to know the theory of 64bit plugs besides memory usage.
Hope this clears up my question sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for you time.

Your pro control won't work with PT11

I also think you are confused. The numerical processing in a plugin is very different from the memory addressing mode it uses (i.e. AAX-32 or AAX-64 bit only talks about the memory addressing mode). Both AAX-32 and AAX-64 plugins can process in 32 bit or 64 bit floating point (and maybe more data formats that current processors support). I would hope a plugin developer chooses the appropriate data-type/math operations for the plugin processing they need and then I expect that developers does not change that part of the processing between AAX-32 and AAX-64 ports of the same plugin. And I'd be surprised if all developers did not want to see null test between AAX-32 and AAX-64 ports of the same plugins.

Darryl

Thanks Darryl You got to the heart of my question

The fact that AAX plugins work in 64 bit domain in PT11 has nothing to do with imaginary 64 bit audio files. It is still 32 bit float but is processed as "double precision" which means you can really try to get it distort but will not succeed.

And for what it's worth, unless you use mostly VI's then it's just as good to keep using trusty old 24 bit fixed-point file format. IMO, benefits from 32 bit floating-point file format are just marketing hype, at least until there are native 32 bit floating-point AD converters

Of course ALL OF THIS is nonsense until you're making KILLER records, that can hang with the big boys, at 16/44.1
