Default Distortion Test Tones

I hear distortion when I play test tones in pro tools unless the fader is set at -6dB or less. When the fader is at 0, the tone distorts badly through the speakers, but the mader fader is not clipping. the master fader clips if I push the fader past 0 (as expected). The tone sounds great when I pull it below -6dB or less and turn up the monitors. What gives?
