S3 is excellent, especially when used in conjunction with AVID Transport (you can get these second fairly cheap) and iPad Control app.

Works extremely well with LogicProX also.

From my experience with a Mackie Control Universal I can tell you that the HUI funcionality in PT is very very basic, specially when comparing the exact same surface controlling Cubase via MCU protocol. Similar experience with my Frontier Alphatrack, so I guess the HUI protocol is poor by design, and it's not the hardware's fault.

Of course it would be great to have MCU support in PT, but I don't see Avid shooting itself on the foot anytime soon, so... Eucon remains our only choice.

If you don't mind using HUI protocols, then there is an other option out there. Icon https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._usb_midi.html and the Icon Qcon pro xs. Will run you for less than the nucleus. Or if you don't mind not having the tactil feel of the fader and knobs you could always go with the slate digital Raven MTI 2.

Getting that the Eucon protocol is more flexible - e.g. you can see the plugin folders when inserting plugins instead of scrolling through the entire list of plugins.

But for sole Logic Pro X use - are there features with Mackie protocol that Eucon cannot match perhaps making the Nucleus the superior choice?

A few months ago I would have said yes. (as a long time, 15 years or so, MCU user).
Things like assigning and controlling aux/sends, the super fast ChannelEQ assignment and control, amongst other things made for a great experience with the MCU protocol.

However, after an initial learning curve with the S3, I find it far superior, even with Logic Pro.
Are there things I miss? Sure, I mean I had to get the AVID Transport (then changed to the AVID Dock) to get transport functionality... which brings another function which was great on the MCU. Holding the locator button and using the wheel to assign a cycle region.. Blah blah.

It's just different. But I have no regrets retiring my MCU in favour of the S3.

+1

Although it's much bigger in size.

S3 has unusable select buttons which are placed to close to faders. For people who work with fader automation this can pose a problem when pressing SEL button causes accidental touching of a fader.

Can i trouble you to elaborate on how you find the S3 superior to MCU solely for logic use.

I am buying an SSL Nucleus 2 Dark since they are $1k off at the moment.

My selling points are:

Audio interface
audio over ethernet
expandability (Dante)
control surface
shortcut and macro configurations
physical transport

will report back :)
