Default Re: HD1 or native

Assuming you are not doing Film / TV Scoring or Orchestral Recordings, given that PT9 Native can do 96 Stereo Tracks, ask yourself just one question:-

- have you ever needed more than 96 Tracks to record a virtually-release-quality recording ?

I think for most [ %95 of home studio users / small studio businesses go ] the answer is no.

Couple PT9 with an awesome interface [ RME / Lynx etc... ] and you will be fine.

Like I said, for other than Film / TV Scoring or Orchestral Recordings, I can see no real or compelling reason to go the Digi / Avid / HD hardware path - stay fully Native and you wont look back.

What WILL limit you quite quickly is how many Soft-Synths you use as the Native X32 architecture places hard-ceiling limits on totall memory used and dynamic memory allocation - however, remeber, going the Digi / Avid / HD hardware path will not change this as this is a PT9 coding issue - its currently only X32.

If it's hanging off of an HD1-TDM rig -- then 'no' -- you'll have limited voices - still due to TDM limitations on voices(tracks). If it's hanging off of the new HD|Native card -- then yes - it will be a pretty powerful stable system as there will be lots more voices available and still allow you to connect to an OMNI Audio Interface.

I believe Avid will sell a lot less HD1's now that PT9 and the HD|Native card are here.

Keep in mind -- if you go with HD|Native you'll not be able to use TDM plugins. Though you'll have more voices.

So the main question you need to answer for yourself is do you want a TDM system or a Native system. If TDM - then get AT LEAST HD2.

Thanks, that sums it up pretty nicely.
It's off an HD native.

Also would like to ask, for recording ADR/VO (some foley, using a Sen MKH 416 and Neum KMR81) how would you rate the quality of going directly into the HD OMNI vs. Presonus Eureka w/Digital IO vs. SSL Alpha Chan?
