Default Feedback loop

Hi all,
I'm new to Pro Tools, downloaded Pro Tools First, when I start a project and either attempt to:
- enable record and play some notes on my midi controller (for the midi tracks)
- click play to hear the pre-populated drum loop

I hear a feedback loop that won't stop.

Could be a MIDI feedback loop going on as it's nigh on impossible to create an audio feedback loop in PT. What other recording software have you used in the past?

ok thanks, I've been using Reaper, just thinking of switching to Pro Tools to take advantage of features like Beat Detective and Elastic Audio, and all the recording/mixing tutorials there are for Pro Tools.
Any suggestions on how to deal with a Midi feedback loop?
Haven't experienced this with Reaper, thanks!

Any feedback loop in general is where the output gets looped back to the input. In the case of MIDI it can be caused by having both of the MIDI connection paths connected. MIDI out on the keyboard to MIDI in on the MIDI interface and MIDI out on the interface connected to the MIDI in on the keyboard. One way to correct that is to disconnect the MIDI out from the computer back to the keyboard. You don't say exactly what you're using for a MIDI interface - is it USB or the old traditional round 5 pin DIN connector? Another way is to turn off 'local on' on your controller. To do that you need to consult your controller's manual. You do have that right?

ok, thanks, the sound I hear on loop is not the midi sounds, just a harsh noise that repeats infinitely
My Roland A-49 midi controller is connected to my computer via usb cable

I tried modifying settings for the "Playback Engine" and the feedback seemed to stop, but now when I try and load a project I get an error that "Pro Tools hardware is either not installed or used by another program"

Make sure that Windows is NOT using your audio interface for system sounds.

Hi all,
Just wondering - any suggestions for this issue?
I found other users with the same issue in another thread, but there was no solution:

How are you powering the interface? USB or wall wart or batteries? If anything other than a wall wart buy the recommended one and use it. You may be having problems with the power supplied by the USB port.
